Feeling A Little Bloated? Down and Out? Sick of Supermodels?
Don't Fret!
It's Eve's First PowerChick!
Issue 3's PowerChick:
Chana Senesh
Vitals:
- Born: Budapest, Hungary, 1921
- Early Signs of Greatness: Wanted to run for head of a club in
her school, but couldn't because she was a Jew.
- What Changed Her Life: Immigrated to Palestine in 1939 to
study agriculture and build a Jewish state.
- Off the Beaten Track: Chana couldn't let her brother and
mother die in Hungary, so she joined the Allies' paratroopers to fight the Nazis.
- High Hopes: After parachuting into Yugoslavia, Chana snuck
into Hungary, but was captured by the Germans.
- Jail Days: Chana was beaten repeatedly and put into solitary
confinement. She was then tried and convicted for treason.
- Why She's So Sassy: During her trial, she renounced her
Hungarian citizenship and accused the country of treason for hatred of its Jewish citizens
and demanded that the Hungarians save their country's Jews.
- The End: She was executed in Hungary in 1944, but her remains
were eventually flown back to Israel, in 1950.
- Cool Quote: "One needs to believe in something for which one
has whole-hearted enthusiasm."
Besides being a martyr and an incredibly
individual human being, Chana was also a brilliant poet. While she was in jail, she wrote
"Eli, Eli" which is Hebrew for "My God, My God".
"Eli Eli" has become a classic and is Mel's personal favourite.
Oh Lord, My God
I pray that these things never end
The sand and the sea
The rush of the waters
The crash of the heavens
The prayer of man
