| "Shaving your
legs isn't something that you do to impress a man!
I think it's basic hygiene, and it's disgusting to look like something out
of "Land of the Apes." Please let's not be so extreme."

| "Only if they want to. But then, no one should shave their legs if they don't want to !" -Cori |
| "
I think that people should
make up their minds themselves whether or not they
are going to shave their legs. Since I believe in
equality for all peoples, and I personally like having
my legs shaved, and I like it when my boyfriend shaves
his legs for swim meets, I think everyone should shave
visible body hair like that found on legs, but that
is just my opinion.
People should decide what they want to do."
-Emily | "If
they want to- it's up to them, right?? You can't judge
someone on stuff like that. If they walk down the
street, people shouldn't say, "oh she can't be a feminist,
she shaves her legs."
It's stupid!"

"I am a 14 year-old guy and I love girls' legs.
What I am saying is, a feminist or not all, girls should shave their legs. That's all I have to say. Thank you." -Robert |
"Feminism (according to Webster's Ninth New
Collegiate Dictionary): 1) the theory of the political,
economic, and social equality of the sexes 2)
organized activity on behalf of women's rights. Does
it say anywhere above that the requirements for
being a feminist is to not shave your legs? No... and
thus, you can shave your legs and still be feminist,
and you can not shave your legs and not be feminist.
I believe that feminism and hairy legs have been
tacked together because it's easy to classify someone
who doesn't shave their legs as feminist rather than
finding out the real reason why. And, for those people
who think that not shaving your legs is disgusting,
are you aware that the whole deal with shaving legs was
started by French prostitutes so that they didn't
have to wear panty hose and thus have a quicker way of
pleasing their customers? Just something to think
about. And, personally, I think if women should have
to shave their legs, than so should guys. What gives
them the right to be hairy, I think that's gross!"

"I believe that feminists should be able to do what
they want to do, whether it be shave their legs or
not. It depends on the person and whether they have
time to do it, want to do it, or are trying to prove that
men should like them for who they are, not their legs."
-Emlee |
"Like, duh! Everyone should shave their legs, even men,
and dogs! Hair is totally gross, and, like, it's such a
turn-off! Girls with hair on their legs totally suck,
and need to get a clue.
Honey, you can never get yourself a man with body hair."
-Anonymous | "As a young feminist I
believe the root of being a feminist comes down to
doing what is right for you at that moment. Not
everyone is at a comfortable place which allows them
to not shave and be accepted for it. I go to a private
Catholic school and am the only girl who doesn't
shave. I receive many negative looks from fellow
classmates and teachers, but the few positive remarks
make it all worthwhile. When I was younger I wouldn't
have been able to not shave, and that is O.K. too.
The most important thing is to know you are beautiful
no matter if you shave or not. "

"The woman who truly believes
in equality should not shave her armpits or legs,
or remove facial hair. Shaving is time-consuming,
dries out the skin, and for some untalented shavers,
can cause knicks and cuts that the strong woman
shouldn't have to endure. This is especially true
when our male counterparts are sporting hairy legs-and
much hairier than ours would be if we would ever let
the hair grow in. Not shaving is easier to get away
with if you are a blonde or if you naturally aren't
very hairy. But, dark-haired women shouldn't shave
either, unless if they truly believe that although
they are shaving, it is something they want to do-not
something society is obligating them do.
We're not alone-those of us who are too sensible to
shave. Many women have stopped the shaving frenzy
already. America is obsessed with hair removal-there are so many hair removal products and techniques it is difficult to keep up with all of them. Our neighboring countries don't throw away the time, energy and money that people of the USA do on hair removal. If people were meant to be bare, then they'd be just that. Hair offers protection! Leave it there! Thus, I know it is hard to stop shaving, especially if none of your peers will join you in doing the same. I, myself, am not strong enough of a woman to stop shaving altogether. But, to start, I only shave for special occasions, and when I do shave, I won't spend more than three minutes doing so. As a strong human being, I have better and more important things to do. I hope you follow this example. But shaving is a woman's choice. There is no law that states she must do so." -Jacqueline, CT age 15 |
"I do not shave my legs and I am a feminist.
Does this mean that all feminists have to shave
their legs??? No! It took me a long time to wean
myself off of razors and shaving cream, and I am
proud that I have done it. I do believe that feminists
should be aware of why women shave their legs and make
their choice on whether to shave or not based on their
knowledge. We live in a male-dominated society in which
women are told to look a certain way and act a certain
way, and yes, we are also told to shave our legs and
armpits! I don't, and I think of this as a stand against
the ridiculous society in which we live. I have also,
painfully, weaned myself off of make-up and I am now an
all-natural gal. The thing to remember about feminism
today is that we are trying to include, accept and
invite all women to join us in our growing strength
and we cannot do that by rejecting people based on
their 'non-feminist' appearance. This is exactly what
the men of the world want us to do and we must all
join together and show them that we are in control of
ourselves and our bodies." -Anonymous |
| "I am a feminist,
but I still think that girls should be able to shave
their legs. It is a personal desicion. I only do it when
I am going to be wearing shorts or a skirt, otherwise
I don't bother. But just because you believe in women's
rights, it doesn't mean that you don't want to look good.
I feel confident when I look my best, and if having
hairless legs allows me to feel good about myself,
isn't that a good thing? I mean, women's rights are all
very well, and I fully agree and support them, by do we
have to give up our femininity? It is a part of us;
women naturally want to feel their best. So there
are two sides. If you are only shaving
(or doing anything else for that matter) for a bloke,
or for someone else, then I don't agree;
you are wasting you time. If you are doing it for yourself
then shave away, and feel confident. "

"Feminists, throughout the years,
have developed certain things which they just don't do.
They don't live up to fascist beauty standards,
allow men to make choices for them, allow the
government to tell them what they can and can't do
with their bodies, but now we're in the 90's where
every little thing must be just the way we like it.
Face it: America
would rather hear the details of Clinton's sex life
than worry about the dying, homeless, stranded,
refugees in Kosovo. Now, due to this, the teen
feminists of America are now setting other national
issues aside, to debate the important, ground-
breaking topic of "Should feminists shave their
legs?" I can't help but chuckle whenever I read that
question; it seems so shallow, that it makes
me wonder what exactly these girls are hoping to
achieve by being a feminist. So, I decided, after
a long 3-second period of meditation, that I would
answer this question and get it over with quickly, so
we can move on to more important things. Well, I
have read a lot of feminist literature, both
historic and modern, and it seems to me that there,
by the moral of a true feminist, is no definite yes
or no answer to this question. I can see why a lot
of girls would say that we shouldn't, because of the
whole "it will show that I waste valuble time
subjecting myself to razor burn and other hazards to
please men" thing. But this is only true for some
girls. Many feminists do shave their legs. Yes, it's
true. It is, according to a lot of teens, attractive
to shave your legs, it is the thing most girls do
to attract males, but there are still a lot of young
women out there (myself included) who do it for no
one but themselves. Shaving, for me, leaves a clean,
free, refreshing feeling that I love, so really,
some would say, if it's just for yourself, then why the
heck not? This argument will go on and on and on; no
one can win this kind of debate. You can't
change the way some people think. But soon, hopefully,
some bright young feminist out there will realize
"Hey, feminism is about freedom and liberation, not
restrictions and requirements" which is very true.
Feminism should be a practice of doing whatever the
hell you want, no matter how many others tell you
its stupid, or not "in".
Now, I'm not saying feminists SHOULD shave their
legs, I'm not even saying that feminists who don't
shave their legs are wrong. It should be treated like
abortion. If we can be pro-choice about abortion, is
there any real reason why we can't be pro-choice
about shaving? So actually, feminist shaving is just a bunch
of hoo-hah. Feminists shouldn't limit themselves
to doing "what feminists do." We are all in the fight for equality
together; no woman in the world "has it easy" or
hasn't been harassed by a guy at some point in her
life. Feminism is liberation, do what you want, and
do it with pride. "

"Should Feminists shave their legs? The answer is, simply, ONLY IF THEY WANT TO!! I don't think women should feel pressured by society today to shave if they don't want to." -Carolyn | "Shaving is an individual's decision. We are women of the 90's, and we do what we feel to be right." -Sally |
