| She-ra, "Princess of Power" | VS | Barbie (Enough said!) |
Though she was a spin-off to her brother and Master of the Universe, He-Man, She-ra is most definitely worthy of the aforementioned title. She carried a sword, breaking the women in combat taboo. Plus, she ran with an estrogen-powered posse of fearless warriors. And facing quasi-realistic situations, like the potential sexual harasser, Hordak, she served as a hero to many girls growing up in the eighties.
Barbie, on the other hand, is responsible for most of the plagues of Western society. Her gravity-defying dimensions would not allow her to menstruate as a human and have caused generations of eating disorders. Furthermore, despite her reincarnations as a businesswoman, an astronaut, and a doctor, Barbie is still as much a symbol of materialism and fantasy as she was in the 50's. Yet, somehow it doesn't surprise me that She-ra's show was cancelled while Barbie is as popular as ever. |
