Back to the Bible

Blue Eyes

by Elizabeth Seward

A religous virus is circulating these days. Every face you see belongs to a person who serves something. Some serve gods, some serve their jobs, some serve the television, while others serve the thought of not serving anything. The list persists on and on. But below this mist of evolving worship, a thing called Chritianity surfaces.

It's pretty far-fetched that an almost ancient religion could relate to the issues of daily modern life. Don't be fooled: The fundamentals of Christianity can be put to use today whether you believe in God or not.

I know that this may sound weird, but how harmful are the fundamentals of a religion that teaches some of the following morals.

Don't steal: We all know that stealing is against the law in almost any country. Yet, people are stealing every day! Theft has especially increased amoung teens recently, most common in the form of shoplifting. As a result of this, thousands of teenagers are ruining their reputations and police records.

Don't lie: We're all too familiar with lying. We've lied and we've been lied to. As a result, we often think that lying about something is the solution to a problem. Lying, many have found, makes everything more difficult. Especially when you're the one being lied to and must decide whether or not to trust a person ever again.

Treat others as you wish to be treated: This isn't the 'golden rule' for nothing.

Thou shalt not kill: Students all over the United States and also in other countries have lost their lives recently to vicious school shootings. Columbine High School-12 students are killed in a cold-blooded masacre. Padukah, Kentucky-3 students are killed because of their practice of prayer before the school day. Athletes, who are supposed to be setting an example for the kids who idolize them, are being charged with multiple counts of murder. Take, for example, the most recent case of Ray Lewis. This linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens is being charged with two counts of murder. Do we really want our children respecting this guy?

Treat Thy Body As A Temple: People are using drugs everywhere! Last year, a teacher was fired at my school for selling heroin to my peers. If people did treat their bodies as temples, drug use in improper forms would be eliminated. Masochistic activities such as the trend of cutting one's self would definitely be erased as well.

You can't really go wrong with Christianity-Christian or not. We need to open our eyes and be willing to explore the aspects of this religion. We often expect religions (like Christianity) to adjust their doctrines to our uneven molds. There are an abundance of people out there who expect Jesus to please us and compromise religous ethics. I, however, encourage readers to avoid these expectations and give the Bible a chance. As I have shown, the Christian manual to life has some valuable tips on how to work this thing called life.
